Features and Color Examination Diagram (觀形察色圖)

 額上屬心火居南, 左頰屬肝木居東, 鼻準屬脾土居中, 右頰屬肺金居西, 頦下屬腎水居北.


The forehead appertains to heart fire, so it is located in the south. The left cheek belongs to liver-wood and is situated in the east. The nose ridge belongs to spleen-earth and so is located in the middle. The right cheek come under lung-metal and is situated in the west. The lower jaw belongs to kidney-water, and so is located in the north.





左頰爲肝, 右頰爲肺, 天庭爲心, 地閣爲腎, 準頭爲脾. 凡五岳赤者皆熱, 淡白者皆虛.


The left cheek is the liver, right cheek is the lungs, chun-jung (天庭) is the heart, ji-gak (地閣) is the kidneys, and jun-du (準頭) is the spleen. Redness of the five hills (五岳) all indicate heat symptoms, and redness or whiteness are all deficiencies.


天庭爲火色, 紅主大熱, 靑乃肝風.


A fiery color (火色) shows on chun-jung. One has a heavy fever if red or liver wind if blue.


印堂, 靑者人驚, 紅白者水火驚. 紅者痰熱.


Blue in-dang (印堂) means that one had been frightened by people, and red or white means fright by wind or fire. Red in-dang refers to phlegm heat (痰熱).


印堂連準頭紅者, 三焦積熱.


When it is red from the indang to forehead, there is accumulated heat in the triple energizers.


印堂至山根紅者, 心小腸熱, 山根至鼻柱紅者, 心胃熱.


Redness of the area from the indang to san-geun means there is heat in the heart or stomach.


鼻居面中爲脾, 紅黃色者無病.


The nose is located in the middle of the face and so belongs to the spleen, and a red or yellow one is healthy.


脾應脣, 紅主渴. 蛔蟲咬心頭者, 脣必反. 人中脣際也. 黑者瀉痢死, 紅色熱痰壅成, 靑色驚風, 黑色爲痛中惡, 黃色傷食吐利.


The spleen corresponds to the lips, and the lips which are red usually have thirst. If worms bite the heart, the lips unfailingly turn out. The philtrum meets at the end of the upper lip. If the philtrum is black, one dies from dysentery, and a red philtrum shows clogging from heat phlegm. Blue refers to convulsions, and black means pain or filth stroke. Yellow shows food damage, in which one vomits and has diarrhea.


左太陽, 靑色驚輕, 紅色傷寒, 黑靑色乳積.


One has light convulsions when the left taeyang acupoint is blue, cold damage when red, and mammary accumulation when dark blue.


右太陽, 靑色驚重, 紅色風搐, 眼目黑者死.


One has severe convulsions when the right taeyang acupoint is blue, wind convulsions when red, and dies when the eyes turn black.


地閣爲腎, 色靑食時驚, 或煩躁夜啼, 黃多吐逆, 紅者腎中氣病. 兩頤赤者肺熱.


Jigak is the kidneys. If it is blue, one is startled when eating, has chapter on Deficiency Vexation and night crying; if it is blue, one often vomits; if red, the kidneys have qi disease. If both jaws turn red, one has lung fever.


山根靑黑, 頻見災危, 必死. 黑色痢疾, 赤黑色吐瀉, 黃色霍亂, 紅色夜啼, 紫色傷飮食.


If a blue-black color often appears on san-geun, one will definitely die for one has ill luck. Black san-geun indicates dysentery, reddish-black means vomiting and diarrhea. One has intestinal convulsion if san-geun is yellow, night crying if red, and food damage if purple.


中庭ㆍ天庭ㆍ司空ㆍ印堂ㆍ額角ㆍ方廣, 皆命門部位, 靑黑爲驚風惡候. 亦忌損陷. 《入門》


CV16 (中庭), Chun-jung (天庭), sa-gong (司空), in-dang, aek-gak (額角) and bang-gwang (方廣) are all areas of the life gate. A dark blue color is an ominous sign of convulsions. It is also bad if this area is injured or caved in. 《入門》

痢疾眉頭皺, 驚風面頰紅, 渴來脣帶赤, 毒熱眼矇矓.


The head of eyebrows are wrinkled when one has dysentery; the cheeks turn red when one has convulsions. The lips redden when one has thirst, and the eyes are drowsy when one has a heat toxin.


山根若見脉橫靑, 此病明知兩度驚, 赤黑困疲時吐瀉, 色紅啼夜不曾停.


When blue capillary pass through san-geun (山根), one has been frightened twice. One with dark red capillaries is tired, vomits, and has diarrhea from time to time. Night crying continues if there is a red vein.


靑脉生於左太陽, 須驚一度見推詳, 赤是傷寒微燥熱, 黑靑知是乳多傷.


If one has blue veins on the left tae-yang, one has been startled once. One has dryness-heat from cold damage if there is a reddish vein; damage by milk if there is a dark blue vein.


右邊靑脉不須多, 有則頻驚怎奈何, 紅赤爲風抽眼目, 黑靑三日見閻羅. 《正傳》


A blue vein doesn't occur often on the right side, but if it does, one had been startled frequently, so what is to be done? One has eye strain caused by wind if there is a red vein, and one will pass away if there is a dark blue vein. 《正傳》

小兒諸病, 但見兩眼無精光, 黑睛無運轉, 目睫無鋒芒, 如魚猫眼狀, 或兩眼閉而黑睛矇矓者, 死. 或外若昏困, 而神藏於內不脫者, 生. 黑珠滿輪睛明者, 少病, 眼白多, 睛珠或黃或小者, 稟弱多病. 目證, 內赤者心熱, 淡紅者心虛熱. 靑者肝熱, 淺淡者肝虛. 黃者脾熱. 無睛光者腎虛. 白而混者肺熱也. 《入門》


Any pediatric disease is fatal if it has any of the following: both eyes have no essence spirit, the pupils don't move, the eyes are like those of a fish or cat because they lack lashes, or the eyes are shut and the pupils are drowsy. Sometimes if one looks stupefied on the outside but the spirit is conserved, one will live. If the black pupils are full on the eyes, round and vivid, one has few ailments; if the whites of the eyes show more and the pupils are yellowish or small, one is inherently weak and suffers much. Reddened eyes indicate heart heat, and a pale pink color means one has a fever from a heart deficiency. One has liver heat if the eyes are blue and if they're pale blue, it is a liver deficiency. Yellow color means spleen heat. Eyes without essence qi show a kidney deficiency. There is lung heat if the eyes are white and cloudy. 《入門》
