40. Depression Veiling 鬱冒

How to explain depression veiling in cold damage? Depression is that qi gets depressed and bound so that fails to relax. Veiling is that one is clouded and veiled so that spirit is unclear. People says this stupor (昏迷).

The reason of depression veiling is that when vacuity is in extreme cold invades. Shang han lun says that ‘in every case invaded by cold, reversal occurs so that there is depression veiling and numbness.’ Also says that ‘when in greater yang disease, initial precipitation fails to bring about recovery and sweating is then promoted, and because of this there is dual exterior-interior vacuity, the person will be encumbered by veiling dizziness. Veiling dizziness patients will recover spontaneously after sweating. This is because sweating harmonizes the exterior’; from this, we can know that cold invades exploiting vacuity, therefore depression veiling occurs.

Jin Gui Yao Lue (金匱要略) says that ‘a woman who just delivered of a child, has three disease of tetany, depression veiling, and difficult defection. In spite of blood collapse, promotion of sweating is applied, therefore cold engenders a lot and depression veiling occurs’, also says that ‘when a woman who delivered of a child has depression veiling, the pulse is faint and weak, there is inability to eat and hard stool, the reason is due to reversal with blood vacuity. In reversal there is always veiling, to resolve veiling patients, great sweating should be promoted; Judging from this, depression veiling is related with vacuity cold.

And ‘when in lesser yin disease diarrhea ceases, and the head is dizzy, and there is frequent spontaneous veiling, this bodes death’; this is that vacuity is extreme so that desertion occurs. When seeing depression veiling, people shouldn’t be flippant.

 

40. 鬱冒

傷寒鬱 冒何以明之? 鬱 爲鬱 結而氣不舒也. 冒爲昏冒而神不淸也世謂之昏迷者是也.鬱 冒之來皆虛極而乘寒則有之矣. [經]曰諸乘寒者則爲厥鬱 冒不仁. 又曰太陽病先下之而不愈因復發汗以此表裏 俱虛其人因致冒冒家汗出自愈. 所以然者汗出表和故也. 是知因虛乘寒乃生鬱 冒.[金匱要略]曰新産婦人有三病. 一者病痙二者病鬱 冒三者大便難. 亡血復汗寒多故令鬱 冒.又曰産婦鬱 冒其脈微弱不能食大便堅. 所以然者血虛而厥厥而必冒冒家欲解必大汗出. 即此觀之鬱 冒爲虛寒可知矣.又或少陰病下利止而頭眩時時自冒者又爲死證 蓋謂其虛極而脫也. 觀其鬱 冒幸無忽焉.
