Shi Gao (gypsum, 石膏)

Major Tx : Vexation and thirst.

White Tiger Decoction (bai hu tang) treats delirious speech and enuresis.
White Tiger Decoction Plus Ginseng (bai hu jia ren shen tang) treats great vexation and thirst.
White Tiger Decoction Plus Cinnamon Twig (bai hu jia gui zhi tang) treats generalized fever without aversion to cold.
Above three formulas use one jin() of Shi Gao respectively
 
Yue Bi Tang (Spleen-Effusing Decoction) treats absence of thirst, spontaneous sweating, and absence of great heat effusion.
(Absence of thirst does not meant absolutely no thirst and absence of great heat effusion also does not indicate absolutely no heat)
Ma huang Xing Ren Can Cao Shi Gao Tang (Ephedra, Apricot kernel, Licorice, and Gypsum Decoction) hasn’t any sign in major and minor Tx.
The two formulas above use haif jin (16g) of Shi Gao.
Da Qing Long Tang (Major Green-Blue Dragon Decoction) treats vexation and agitation.
Mu Fang Ji Tang (Woody Fangji Decoction) hasn’t any sign in major and minor Tx.
The two formulas above use half jin (egg size, 16g) of Shi Gao.
Considering above formulas, it is sure that Shi Gao treats vexation and thirst mainly. When there are some signs like vexation and agitation, generalized fever, delirious speech, toothache, or headache, if the person has vexation and thirst, shi gao will be effective.(藥徵)

Differentiation
Ge Gen (葛根) : sweet, pungent, and cool. resolve the flesh and abate heat. (The flesh heat that Ge Gen treats is close to the exterior which greater yang governs)
Shi Gao (石膏) : pungent, sweet, and extremely cold. Effuse with pungent and then clear heat with cold nature. (Clear flesh heat, yang brightness heat)
Da Huang (大黃): bitter and cold. Clear heat by defecation.
 

2. Hua Shi (talcum. 滑石)

 
Major Tx : Inhibited urination.
Minor Tx : thirst. (藥徵)
 
 
 
 

3. Mang xiao (芒硝 mang xiao)

 
Major Tx : Soften hardness so that it treats hard glomus below the heart, hardness as like rock below the heart, smaller abdominal acute bind, chest bind, dry stool, and hard stool.
Minor Tx : abiding food, abdominal fullness, smaller abdominal swelling and glomus (藥徵)
