Head (頭) in dong yi bo gam (東醫寶鑑)






谷者, 天谷也. 神者, 一身之元神也. 天之谷, 含造化, 容虛空, 地之谷, 容萬物, 載山川. 人與天地同所禀, 亦有谷焉. 其谷藏眞一, 宅元神. 是以頭有九宮, 上應九天, 中間一宮, 謂之泥丸, 又曰黃庭, 又名崑崙, 又謂天谷. 其名頗多, 乃元神所住之宮. 其空如谷, 而神居之, 故謂之谷神. 神存則生, 神去則死. 日則接於物, 夜則接於夢, 神不能安其居也. 黃帝內經曰, 天谷元神, 守之自眞. 言人身中, 上有天谷泥丸, 藏神之府也. 中有應谷絳宮, 藏氣之府也. 下有虛谷關元, 藏精之府也. 天谷, 元宮也. 乃元神之室, 靈性之所存, 是神之要也. 《正理》

 

Gu () is the valley of the heaven (天谷). The spirit () is original spirit (元神) of the body. Heavenly Valley is harmonious and contains emptiness, earthly heaven contains all things and nature. Human is endowed with samething with heaven and earth, therefore has a valley in the body.

In the valley the true one is kept and original spirit resides. Thus, there are nine palaces (九宮) in the head which correspond to the nine heaven. There is one palace(一宮) in the center and this is called the Ni Wan Palace (泥丸宮). This is also called Huang Ting(黃庭), Kun Lun (崑崙), or heavenly valley (天谷). Although there are lots of names for it, all of them  mean palace where the original spirit resides. Because the spirit dwells in a space as like valley, so this is called valley spirit. If the spirit remains one lives, and when it leaves one dies. It is hard for the spirit to be quiet because it meets with exterior objects in the day time and dreams in the night time. Nei Jing (內經) said that if one can protects the source spirit (元神) in the heavely valley, one spontaneously becomes the True Person.

Comparing this to human body, at the top there is Ni Wan Palace (泥丸宮) which corresponds to heavenly valley, this is the house where the spirit resides. In the center there is Red Palace which is corresponds Ying valley (應谷), and this is where qi resides. In the lower there is CV4 (guan yuan) which corresponds to Xu Gu (虛谷), and this is house where essence resides. Heavely valley is original palce and the house of the original spirit. This is the key of spirit.

腦爲髓之海. 髓海有餘, 則輕勁多力, 不足, 則腦轉, 耳鳴, 脛痠, 眩冒, 目無所見. 《靈樞》

The brain is the sea of marrow. When the sea of marrow is in superabundance, the body feels light, strong, and energetic. If the sea of marrow is insufficient, the head experiences spinning brain and there is tinnitus, aching pain in the lower leg, dizziness, and blurred vision. 《靈樞》

腦者, 髓之海, 諸髓皆屬於腦. 故上至腦, 下至尾骶, 皆精髓升降之道路也. 《入門》

The brain is the sea of marrow and every bone marrow is related with the brain. Therefore the sea of marrow reaches the brain in the upper part and the coccyx in the lower part, and that is the pathway of essence marrow. 《入門》

髓者, 骨之充也. 髓傷則腦髓消爍, 體解㑊然不去也. 註曰, 不去者, 不能行去也. 《內經》

The marrow fills the bones. When the marrow is damaged, the brain marrow disperses and is scorched, therefore one cannot move as in the case of fatigue syndrome. In the Annotation, it says, "inability to move indicates inability to walk around. "《內經》

頭者, 精明之府, 頭傾視深, 精神將奪矣. 《內經》

 

The head is the house of Bright Essence. If the head gets to tilt and the eyes grow hollow, this means that the mental is about to be lost. 《內經》

傷寒, 頭重不能擧, 有二證. 太陽病深, 頭重不能擧, 陰陽易病, 亦頭重不能擧, 皆危證也.

 

Heavy head with difficulty to lift in cold damage has two cases. The first is when greater yang disease is too is severe, the second is when there is a yin-yang transmission syndrome. Both belong to critical syndromes. 《入門》

傷寒, 陽脈不和, 則頭爲之搖, 有心藏絶者, 亦搖頭, 痓病, 風盛則搖頭, 皆凶證也. 《入門》

 

When yang pulse is not harmonious in cold damage, the head shakes. When the heart is about to expire, the head also shakes. When wind [evil] is exuberant in tetany disease, there is also shamking of the head. All of them are critical signs. 《入門》

有裏痛而搖頭者, 亦重證也. 《入門》

Shaking of the head due to pain in the head is also a critical sign. 《入門》
