  Student: What is the difference between edema and floating qi? Zhishan Teacher: Edema is a water-related disease. When the area under the eyes swells, it is considered a water disease. In this case, we use Wu ling San or Wei ling Tang ( 五苓散 or 胃苓湯) . However, if there is swelling without the area under the eyes swelling, it is floating qi caused by a qi disease. For floating qi due to a qi disease, we use Liuqi Yinzi 流氣飮子 .

  Based on the patient's features, the most notable aspects are the nose, eyebrows, and lips. First, the long nose indicates an inability to concentrate essence, meaning poor interaction between the heart, spleen, and kidneys. In this case, to achieve the balance of water rising and fire descending, the recommended medicine is "Ershen Jiaojidan 二神交濟丹 ." Second, long eyebrows suggest a condition of "low qi and abundant blood" (i.e., taiyang), which implies a blood deficiency . The patient's physique inherently requires more blood, but due to insufficient blood, illness occurs. Third, thin lips indicate a condition related to water and fire, corresponding to yin deficiency.
